In joint sessions we look at the recurring cycle of conflict, old hurts and closeness; at the start we also see each partner once on their own.

In couples therapy the client is not one person but the relationship itself. In the first joint session we talk about why you have come now and what you would like to change; then each of you comes once on your own. These individual sessions give you room to talk about your own family history and your place in the relationship, details that can be hard to say in front of your partner.

What do we look at in sessions?

Most couples have the same argument over and over again, just about different topics: one moves closer to talk, the other feels overwhelmed and pulls back. In sessions we look at this cycle more than at who is right. Once the cycle is visible, it becomes easier to pause in the middle of an argument and try to repair.

We draw on Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy and the Gottman method, but we do not apply a ready-made programme. Every couple has its own pace and needs.

If you are at a crossroads

Some couples come without knowing whether they want to stay together. In that case we set aside a few sessions for this question alone: carry on, take a break, or separate? Whichever you choose, we try to help you make the decision in a language you can both understand.

How long does it take? Most processes take 10–20 sessions; we decide together at the review.

Who is it for?

  • You feel you keep having the same argument
  • There is distance or silence between you
  • You want to talk again after a breach of trust
  • You are struggling to decide whether to stay together
  • You are facing a big change such as having a child or moving

When might it not be the right fit?

  • There is ongoing physical or severe psychological violence: safety and individual support come first
  • One partner does not want to come and is being pressured
  • An active addiction has not been treated

If this applies to you, let’s talk openly on the first call; we will point you to the right place. In an emergency, call 112 (the emergency number in Türkiye).

How does the process unfold?

The blue and plum lines stand for the two partners: rows where they run side by side are joint sessions, rows where they part are separate sessions.

Questions about this session

QuestionMy partner doesn’t want to come. Can I start alone?

Answer
Yes. You can start with relationship-focused individual sessions. If your partner later wants to join, we will consider moving on to couples work together; to keep neutrality, the couples process is usually led by our other therapist.

QuestionWill what I say in an individual session be shared with my partner?

Answer
No. What you say in an individual session stays in the therapist’s own notes. However, if information that directly affects the process is kept hidden, couples therapy may not be able to continue; in that case we look together for a way for you to share it. We agree on this approach in writing in the first joint session.

Let’s start with a phone call.

The first call takes 15 minutes and is free. We agree on a suitable day and time together on the phone.
